Well this was the big one. The Queensland
Cup Grand Final match between the
Redcliffe Dolphins and the Burleigh
Bears. It was Redcliffe's third grand
final appearance in four years whereas
this was Burleigh's first. Having just
watched two entertaining matches in the
Colts and A Grade finals (Redcliffe won
both), I was pretty sure that the main
one would be just as good. I wasn't
disappointed.
Burleigh had first advantage when
Redcliffe only made 30 metres in their
first six. Shortly after, Burleigh
received a penalty on front and Ben Lythe
kicked the conversion.
The Bears continued to have possession
when Tony Gould didn't kick 10 metres
from the restart. Moments later, Ben
Lythe kicked a 40-20 to put more pressure
on the Dolphins. However, Redcliffe held
out these advances to their line.
Burleigh scored the first try of the
match in the 20th minute. Halfback and
captain, Grant Adamson threw a pass to
Darren Anderson who ran through a gap in
Redcliffe's defence and scored a fairly
easy try. Lythe added the extras and
Burleigh led 8-0.
Both teams continued to attack well but
Redcliffe was let down by handling errors
and Burleigh by missed tackles.
Redcliffe were denied a try by ref, Tony
Maksoud when Mixie Lui threw a very flat
pass to Trent Leis who would have scored
the try. The pass was called forward but
looking at the replay, well, there was
millimetres in it.
However, the Dolphins were not to be
denied the second time. Burleigh 5-8th,
Craig Freer, threw a wayward pass to
rival, Sam Obst, who set the scene up for
a Dolphins try. A few passes later, Obst
threw a long pass to Mixie Lui who gave
it to Trent Leis thus scoring the try.
Leis was unable to convert his try and
the score was 8-4 to Burleigh.
That's how it remained up to half-time.
Burleigh was dealt a blow, early in the
second half when try scoring ace, Aaron
Douglas was crunched by Redcliffe's Ian
Graham. Douglas had an unlucky start to
the half by getting tackled in goal from
the kick-off and coughing up the ball in
a crucial spot.
Play was stopped for a few minutes while
Douglas was attended to. During this
break, the two mascots (the Bear and the
Dolphin) had a bit of fun by trying to
beat each other up. It added a little
humour to what may have been a sour
moment. However, Aaron wasn't injured
badly at the end of the game.
Minutes later after the restart, Burleigh
coughed the ball up in their half. Then
Redcliffe received a penalty in front and
Leis added the conversion. Burleigh 8-6.
The game continued it's see-sawing way
with both sides showing great attacking
skills. But, it was Redcliffe who were to
capitalize next. Some wonderful breaks by
the Dolphins was finally finished off by
Rick Hewinson, who scored in the corner.
Leis made a meal of the conversion but
Redcliffe had now grabbed the lead for
the first time in the match. Redcliffe
10-8.
The Dolphins started to get on top of
their opponents and Burleigh was having
trouble getting out their own half.
Ironically, the match swayed back to
Burleigh when Ben Roedder attempted to
charge down a Grant Adamson kick.
Fullback, Jamie Mahon made a great break
and the Dolphins' defensive line was in
disarray. Reggie Cressbrook was held up
in-goal but Jamie Mahon was able to
score, moments later. Try not converted
but the Bears had snatched the lead
again. Burleigh 12-10.
The game was not over, yet for Redcliffe.
Sam Obst fired a pass to Trent Leis, who
raced down the field. However, a superb
tackle by prop, Shane O'Flanagan, put
Leis into touch and that was the last
real chance Redcliffe had of winning the
match.
Full-time sounded and the Burleigh Bears
were the 1999 Queensland Cup title
holders for the first time.
So congratulations to Rick Stone and the
Burleigh players for the great win. They
have played great football all year and thoroughly deserve their victory, today.
I'm the sure the Burleigh supporters
would have been celebrating all the way
down the Pacific Highway and back to the
Burleigh Leagues Club, that night.
As for the Redcliffe Dolphins, well,
there's always next year. For this
Dolphins supporter, it was a long way
back home in the car. Ironically, I felt
more disappointed at this loss then I did
at the Broncos loss to Cronulla, last
week.
Well that just about wraps it up for the
Queensland Cup for 1999. The competition
was great this year and it will continue
to improve, as the years come. With the
rationalization going on in the NRL, I'm
sure the Queensland Cup will hopefully
benefit from that. Onto next year!!.
