Report by:
Matthew Lyne.
Saturday's semi-final saw the minor premiers, Redcliffe Dolphins, play the Burleigh Bears at Dolphin Oval. The winner of this match would automatically qualify for the grand final while the loser would play the winner of the Norths/Toowoomba (which was played today) match. Also, Tony Gould (Redcliffe captain and lock) notched up 100 games for the Dolphins today.

Neither side gained any ascendancy in the opening moments. Mistakes, which would play a large part in the match, cost both sides and in the 10th minute, Burleigh conceded a penalty. Craig O'Dwyer seized this opportunity by darting from dummy-half, through the Bear's defence, and over for the first points of the match. Try converted. Redcliffe 6-0.

However, Redcliffe's joy was short lived when they threw a forward pass, directly after the kick-off. Burleigh centre, Darren Anderson, scored out wide to peg back the Dolphins' lead. Conversion unsuccessful. Redcliffe 6-4.

Mistakes continued to flow for both sides. Redcliffe's next try was scored from a Burleigh knock on, Rick Hewinson the scorer. Leis added the two points and Redcliffe led 12-4.

The Dolphins had another chance to extend the score when Chris Essex intercepted a pass from Burleigh. The Bears were putting some pressure on Redcliffe at that time. Essex, however, did not have the speed to get to the try line and was tackled. The ball was passed to Trent Leis were was certain to score out wide. But, a great tackle from Shane O'Flanagon, saw Trent go into touch. A bombed chance for the Dolphins.

Unfortunately, Burleigh hit back via an Adam Mogg knock on in Redcliffe's half. Aaron Douglas continued his try feast this year by scoring number 27. Lythe added the extras and Redcliffe now led by only two points. Redcliffe 12-10.

More Redcliffe mistakes were costly. They had their chances of scoring but error cost them dearly. It was one of these errors that led Burleigh captain, Grant Adamson, to score and the Bears had grabbed the lead, for the first time in the match. Try converted. Burleigh 16-12.

After the kick-off, a penalty was conceded by Burleigh and Leis kicked the goal for Redcliffe. Burleigh 16-14 and it remained that way at the half time break.

The second half started off in similar fashion to the first. Errors continued to come however the intensity of both sides increased dramatically. Burleigh got a penalty in front of their goal posts when Craig O'Dwyer put a high tackle on Grant Adamson. Tell you the truth, it looked like more a slap to me but the ref saw otherwise. Ben Lythe kicked the goal and Burleigh led 18-14.

Although the game had picked up in intensity, the trend of scoring tries directly after mistakes would commence and Redcliffe were the next side to score in such fashion. Burleigh knocked on and Trent Leis scored out wide. However, he made an absolute meal of the conversion and the scores were tied at 18-18 apiece.

Burleigh hit back again from, you guessed it, a Redcliffe mistake in their own half. Darren Anderson scored his second try and Burleigh hit the lead again. Try converted. Burleigh 24-18.

Redcliffe tried and tried to come back but Burleigh held them out. It wasn't to be the Dolphins day and Burleigh ran out winners, 24-18 thus securing a spot in the grand final. Crucial errors clearly cost the Dolphins the match and now they face either Norths or Toowoomba next week. If they put up a similar performance, next week, then it could be the end of the road for the Dolphins.
