The winner of Saturday's match would play
Burleigh in the Grand Final, at Lang
Park, next week. Norths had a tough win
against Toowoomba while Redcliffe lost to
Burleigh, in a mistake ridden effort.
Both clubs have a good rivalry and this
game was bound to have a bit of passion
in it. Norths started off strongly. They
dominated possession in the opening
minutes and after several raids at
Redcliffe's try line, Matt Bickerstaff
broke from the scrum and charged over for
the try. Try not converted. Norths 4-0.
It didn't take long for Norths to extend
their lead. Constant pressure saw prop,
Wade Fenton, barged through the Dolphins'
defence and scored a simple try. John
Wilshere converted the try and the Devils
had Redcliffe seemly at their mercy.
Norths 10-0.
Norths continued to pile on the pressure.
Matt Bickerstaff made a barn storming
run. He charged, weaved, palmed off 6 or
7 Redcliffe players in a superb effort. Unfortunately, Kevin Carmichael's kick
wasn't as brilliant and Bickerstaff's
effort was to no avail. This seemed to be
the turning point of the match. Redcliffe
scored shortly after thanks to a classy
team effort. After some great passing,
Sam Obst made a break and Rick Hewinson
scored out wide. Try not converted.
Norths 10-4.
Redcliffe scored another try, shortly
after to tie up the game. A penalty to
the Dolphins, a great kick down field and
Sam Obst set up the try. Trent Leis added
the extra's and it was 10-10, 13 minutes
remaining in the first half. The tide had
turned in Redcliffe's favour. The
Dolphins' pack was clearly making inroads
into the Norths' defence. The score
remained 10-10 up to half-time thus
setting up an exciting second half. 40
minutes to go and only one side would
make it. Who would it be?
The Dolphins' came out firing all
cylinders. Half-back, Michael Roberts,
cut through a hole in the Devils' defence
and Rick Hewinson finished it off with
his second try of the day. Try
unconverted but Redcliffe had hit the
lead for the first time in the match.
Redcliffe 14-10.
Norths' had a chance to hit back thanks
to a Dolphins' knock on. However, an
astray pass went back to Reddy winger,
Trent Leis. Redcliffe, then, received a
penalty and got great field position from
the kick. It didn't take long for
Redcliffe to capitalize thanks to
captain, Tony Gould. He outsmarted his
opponents and went over for the try. Leis
kicked the conversion and the Dolphins
had this game by the scruff of the neck.
Redcliffe 20-10.
Norths, being the classy side they are,
were not going to lie down that easily.
Redcliffe prop, Ian Graham, gave a stupid
penalty for striking and allowed Norths
to have a chance of hitting back. It
didn't take long and Daniel Frame scored
close to the posts. Try converted.
Redcliffe 20-16.
After bombing several chances, the
Dolphins put on another try. A great pass
from Mixie Lui to Trent Leis, saw the
winger race down the field. He finally
threw the ball to Adam Mogg who scored
the try, under the posts. Try converted
and Redcliffe had this one in the bag. Or
did they?
The Dolphins coughed up the ball
immediately after the kick-off. Norths
went wide and almost scored a try.
However a great tackle from Sam Obst
stopped this. But Redcliffe coughed up
the ball again thus giving Norths another
crack at their line. They didn't score in
this six but when Redcliffe knocked on
yet again, Kevin Carmichael went over.
Wilshere converted and Norths still were
in with a chance. Redcliffe 26-22.
Unfortunately for Norths, it wasn't to be
and the Dolphins ran out winners 26-22.
They now advance to grand final where
they play Burleigh for the chance to win
the 1999 Queensland Cup. So all you
Brisbanites out there, get out to Lang
Park on Saturday and watch, what promises
to be, a great game of rugby league. Now
that the Broncos are gone for the season,
go out and watch a bit of local footy.
Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
