played Ipswich in all three grades today
and went undefeated.
Colts fought out a spiteful
16 all draw involving multiple head high
shots and several mini brawls. Ipswich
managed 2 poor field goal attempts in the
latter stages but Redcliffe held on to
get the point. The Dolphins are now on 5
points from 4 matches and are no
certainties for the top 4 at this stage.
The 2000 Colts team is a very young team
as most Colts that were retained have
moved up to A Grade this season.
In A Grade Redcliffe were
never troubled running out easy winners
40 points to nil over a lacklustre
Ipswich side. Ipswich never looked like
scoring and will press hard for the
wooden spoon in their first year back in
A Grade for some time. The A Grade
premiers are now undefeated after 4
rounds with Easts, Norths , and Logan
looking like their main opponents to
another title.
In the Bundy Gold Cup match
Redcliffe got home 26 points to 16 in
somewhat disheartening match. At times
Redcliffe showed the skill and flair in
the back line they've become famous for
but also showed a total lack of cohesion
finishing the moves. Damien Richters and
Ata Isarabhakdi dazzled the Ipswich defence time and again only to push the
last pass of lose control of the ball.
More disturbingly Richters
failed again under the high ball when the
pressure was on. Mogg is playing from the
bench at the moment and may need to be
considered again purely as he used to be
(before last season anyway) safe as
houses under the high ball. Wharton
rotated the props so much it was
difficult to get a feel for how each one
was going. Campbell was brilliant at
times as was Hinchey.
Redcliffe lead 6 nil after
only a minute and it seemed they might
put on a big score but to the Jets credit
they fought back so much so that
Redcliffe opted for the 2 points when
they received a penalty reasonably wide
out. Ipswich closed the score to 8 - 6
shortly after but Redcliffe scored again
to give them a 14 - 6 lead at half time.
Ipswich hit back to trail by 2 but from
there Redcliffe forced out to the 26
points to 10 lead before the Jets scored
a consolation try late in the game.
Still 2 points is 2 points
but I have a feeling Redcliffe might be
in some trouble when they front up to the
likes of Easts or Toowoomba. The Dolphins
find themselves with 3 wins from 4
matches and a share of the competition
lead with Toowoomba, Norths, Easts ,
Central Comets, and Souths.
Next week in the Qld Cup
Redcliffe play the Central Comets in
Rockhampton which won't be an easy task.
The lower grades take on Logan City at
Meakin Park from 3pm as the early games
to the Logan City v Toowoomba clash.
