Redcliffe had a strong breeze behind them for the first half but it did them no good. Souths were enthusiastic from the outset and their Auckland backs were bigger and faster than their Redcliffe counterparts. After good early football Redcliffe began to fall down in a few areas. Richters and Leis were unable to shut down bombs in the swirling breeze. Several near misses were averted by the bounce of the ball. More bombs found the ground than the arms of the Redcliffe defenders. Also gaps opened up out wide with Souths offloading constantly.

Matt McCosker was first to take advantage of this when he scored around 15mins into the first half. Mulhall converted to give Souths a 6 - nil lead. Last years wooden spooners lacked nothing in confidence and even took quick taps from penalties. NRL player Lee Oudenryan was next to score after showing blistering speed to dive on a rolling ball which was the result of another missed attempt to field a bomb by Richters. With the score at 10 nil the crowd became aware an upset was on the cards.

Redcliffe fought back hard in the minutes before half time and were held up over the try line. In the play from the ensuing scrum however, Souths winger Meli took a flying intercept and raced length of the field to score. Mulhall converted to end the half 16 nil to Souths.

The second half comeback by Redcliffe came all to late. Souths scored again to lead 20 - nil. The crowd fired up at this point. Souths had spent the game off-side and Referee Stuart Berndt failed to police the ten. The Dolphins rallied with a good try to Trent Leis however James Hinchey was sent to the sin bin shortly after for holding down in a tackle. Redcliffe tried hard but couldn't crack the Souths defence all night. Hinchey collected a try after his return but it was too little to late.

Watch for Souths to challenge for the final 5 this season. Redcliffe will need a big performance to beat Norths away next weekend. If they don't, things might start to look a bit bleak for the mighty Dolphins this year. Lets hope the pick it up and upset Norths.
