Round 14: May 27, 28

Redcliffe Dolphins 18
Tries: Damien Richters 2, Barry Denduck, John Olzard
Goals: Damien Richters
defeated Ipswich Jets 10
Tries: Ross Mitchell, Dale Robertson
Goals:
Chris Lawler
Venue: First Provincial Oval
Date: Sat May 27

Comments:
Another week, another win for Redcliffe.  But this time they had to really work hard for the victory against a tenacious Ipswich Jets outfit.  The Jets got off to a great start by scoring two tries in the opening minutes of the game.  First one came just after 3 minutes when hooker, Dale Robertson, found his way over the line to score the try close to the posts.  The next one should never have been awarded.  A chip kick into the corner by McGowan saw Dolphins' winger George Saleh wait for the ball to go dead. Ross Mitchell then raced in and supposedly forced the ball down.  However, it was clear that Mitchell did not force the ball down properly and the try should have not been awarded. Redcliffe were impatient at times and were frustrated by the superb defence by the Jets.  They never scored any points in the first half and Ipswich led 10-0 at the break.

After the break, the Dolphins finally got on the board courtesy of a Jets' mistake.  The ball was eventually passed to Damien Richters who scored in the corner.  They closed the gap even further with a try to Barry Denduck. Redcliffe finally got in front thanks to a brilliant individual run by Trent Leis.  Leis pounced on a Chris Lawler grubber kick and beat 5 Ipswich defenders to race down the field.  He then passed the ball to Damien Richters and he finished off the magnificent 103 metre try.  Richters converted his own try and put Redcliffe in the lead for the first time in the match.  A try to John Olzard put the result beyond doubt and the red and whites had got out of jail.  The Jets gave it all they got and were very good in defence.  But they lacked imagination in attack at times and that's what ultimately costed them the game as Redcliffe ran them down in the second half.

Central Queensland Comets 48
Tries: Wade Rothery 2, Heath Egglestone 2, Darren Atkinson, Justin Loomans, Clint Rothery, Sime Busby, Danny Price
Goals: Graham White 3, Danny Price 3
defeated Cairns Cyclones 4
Goals:
Scott Williamson 2
Venue: Browne Park
Date: Sat May 27
Comments: After their upset win against Ipswich last week, Cairns have fallen back to the ground with a tremendous thud copping a belting from the Comets. Central have got their act together and are still a slim chance of making of the semi-finals. Wade Rothery and Heath Egglestone scored doubles as the Comets went on a 9 try romp against the hapless Cyclones.

Norths Devils 38
Tries: Steve Bell 2, Andrew Duncan, Ashley Dudson, Kevin Carmichael, Glen Turner, Gus McKellar, Jason Fenton
Goals: Gus McKellar 2, Marty Turner
defeated Wests Panthers 32
Tries: Semi Tadulala 2, Aaron Morgan, Jason Bulgarelli, Paul Mitchell, Mark Eacott
Goals: Brent Webb 3, Nathan Webber
Venue: Bishop Park
Date: Sun May 28
Comments: Norths ended up winning this game but the ever improving Panthers gave them a real test. Wests got within 6 points of the Devils at Bishop Park, even with most of Norths' players back from NRL duty with the Melbourne Storm. Still, I'm sure Mark Murray will be happy with the 2 points and will be looking forward for the Origin period to finish.

Toowoomba Clydesdales 42
Tries: Adam Warwick 2, Alex Wilson 2, Chris Walker, Michael Ryan, Damon Keating
Goals: Jace Van Dijk 7
defeated Souths Magpies 28
Tries: Henry Fa'afili 2, Ben Davidson, Matt McCosker, Josh Stowers
Goals: David Mulhall 4
Venue: Davies Park
Date:
Sun May 28
Comments: Toowoomba continued to show why they are the best attacking side in the competition with a haul of 42 points against Souths. However, they also let the Magpies score 28 of their own. None the less, the Clydesdales still got the victory which is important for them as they stand to lose many players for next week against Logan. On the home side, I'd say it's just about curtains for the Maggies for this year.

Easts Tigers 30
Tries: Scott Thorburn 2, Gavin Allan, John Wilshere, Mark Mom, George Gatis
Goals: John Wilshere 2, Scott Thorburn
defeated Logan City Scorpions 26
Tries: Phil Shilvock 2, Terry O'Regan 2, Charles Kennedy
Goals: Grant Dutton 3
Venue: Langlands Park
Date:
Sun May 28
Comments: A narrow win to Easts over Logan. The Scorpions have picked up their act against the higher ranked sides but, unfortunately for them, a loss by four points is not good enough if they are any chance of making the semi-finals. The Tigers keep churning out narrow victories and stay in third spot.

Burleigh Bears 40
Tries: Reggie Cressbrook, Jim Lenihan, Grant Adamson, Dean Allen, Ali Brown, Simon Geros, David Parker
Goals: Reggie Cressbrook 6
defeated Wynnum Seagulls 24
Tries: John Plath 2, Angus Martin, Troy Fiteni
Goals: Dallas McIllwain 4
Venue: Pizzey Park
Date: Sun May 28
Comments: Burleigh were expected to win this game against the winless Wynnum and did so accordingly. But it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Bears. The Seagulls led 20-18 at halftime and were leading 24-22 in the 62th minute before the class of the defending premiers came through and the home side scored three tries to run out winners. Burleigh now have a three point gap on sixth placed Ipswich and Central on the table after the win. Despite their spirited showing at Pizzey Park, Wynnum still remain at the bottom of the ladder.
