Toowoomba
Clydesdales 62
Tries: Chris
Walker 5, Justin Hodges 2, Craig Frawley,
Carl Webb, Kirk Reynoldson, Shane Walker
Goals: Jace
Van Dijk 7, Damien Quinn 2
defeated Ipswich
Jets 32
Tries: Chris
Lawler 2, Brad Bulow, Russell Bussian,
Francis Renouf, Richard Allwood, Nick Hall
Goals: Chris
Lawler 2
Venue: ANZ
Stadium
Date: Fri April 7
Comments: A high scoring game
with Toowoomba racking over 60 points
against the hapless Ipswich. The game was
virtually over after 20 minutes with the
Clydesdales scooting out to a 22-0 lead. They led 34-8 at half-time but their
defence faulted in the second half, with
Ipswich scoring 24 points. However, the
Jets had no answer for the raging
Toowoomba backs and their apparent
weakness out wide was fully exploited by
their opponents. The chief destroyer for
the Clydesdales was Chris Walker, who
just returned from injury, as he scored 5
tries to go with the 7 he scored against
Wests, earlier on in the year. Toowoomba
running out 30 point winners.
Redcliffe Dolphins 36
Tries: Adam
Mogg, Damien Richters, Glen Air, Tony
Gould, Adam Starr, Rob Campbell
Goals: Damien Richters 6
defeated Logan City
Scorpions 12
Tries: Grant
Dutton 2
Goals: Grant
Dutton 2
Venue: Dolphin Oval
Date:
Sat April 8
Comments: Too good, too
big and too strong in the end. That was
the verdict from this game. Logan came
out and scored the first try but it was
Redcliffe who took a 12-6 half-time lead. However, the Dolphins' lack of execution
and poor discipline saw the Scorpions get
back into the game when they trailed
12-18, early in the second half. However,
Redcliffe eventually wore down their
opposition and ran away with the game in
the end. Logan proving once again that,
when it comes to playing the top sides,
they can not match them in the full 80
minutes.
Easts Tigers 32
Tries: Aseri
Laing 2, Brook Martin, Scott Thorburn,
Daniel Frame, Chris Nahi
Goals: John Wilshere 4
defeated
Wests Panthers 22
Tries: Craig
Smith 3, Brent Webb, John Bruce
Goals: Nathan Bourke
Venue: Purtell Park
Date: Sat April 8
Comments: Plenty of
feeling in this game with two players sent off for fighting. Wests' Craig
Smith and Easts' Daniel Frame were sent
off by referee, Paul Oliver, in the 60th
minute. The Tigers ended up winning the
game but the Panthers put up a spirited
fight with Smith scoring three tries.
Norths Devils 32
Tries: Tai Lavea, Fifita
Moala, Steve Bell, Matt Dux, Dane Morgan,
Chris Essex
Goals: Gus McKellar 3, Tai Lavea
defeated Central
Queensland Comets 16
Tries: Ian Dunemann,
Darren Atkinson, Justin Loomans
Goals: Ken Graham 2
Venue: Bishop Park
Date: Sat April 8
Comments: The Devils
came home strongly in this game against
the Comets, who have now lost three games
in a row. After a good start to the year,
Central are now struggling to win games
and can not seem to do well away from
Rockhampton.
Cairns Cyclones 28
Tries: Jason Barsley, Paul
Fowler, Steve Singleton, Jason Berg, Adam Bowditch
Goals: Scott
Williamson 4
defeated
Wynnum Seagulls 18
Tries: David Seage 2, Sam Patterson
Goals: Jay
O'Doherty 3
Venue: Mareeba
Date: Sat April 8
Comments: This game was
initially scheduled at Barlow Park but
was moved to Mareeba due to the
waterlogged nature of the Cyclones' home
ground. Needless to say, it proved to be
a good move as Cairns registered their
first victory of the season. They
defeated the Wynnum Seagulls by 10 points
and the Seagulls would now be favourites
to end up with the wooden spoon. However,
they still have plenty of opportunities
to reverse their dismal season and put up
a good showing for the rest of the year.
Souths Magpies 22
Tries: David Mulhall, Troy
Clackson, Henry Perenara, Monty Betham
Goals: David Mulhall 3
defeated Burleigh
Bears 16
Tries: Aaron Douglas,
Grant Adamson, Nick Shaw
Goals: Reggie
Cressbrook 2
Venue: Davies Park
Date: Sun April 9
Comments: I had a
sneaking suspicion that the Magpies would
give the reigning premiers a real test
and surely enough, they pulled off a win
against Burleigh. Souths scooted out to a
18-4 lead but the Bears came back to
trail only 18-16 with 20 minutes to go. However, the Magpies held on for a well
deserved 6 point victory. By all reports
ex-Burleigh Bear Ben Lythe had a good
game for Souths against his old club. A
win puts the Maggies in the top 5.
