Thursday night's game saw Wests take on Wynnum at Purtell Park. Both teams have had pretty ordinary records in 2000 with only one game won between the two sides. The Seagulls put up an inspiring effort against Redcliffe and were close enough to almost upset their more fancied rivals. They would chancing themselves to topple the home side after last week's effort and try to break through for their maiden win.

Wests, on the other hand, are coming off a loss to Logan. The Panthers have been very competitive at their home ground. They have won against Central here and also tested top sides Norths, Redcliffe and Easts. Also, the game would be a milestone for Wests' coach, Wayne Treleaven, as he chalked up 100 at the helm of the red and blacks. Apart from looking to win game number two, the Panthers had an extra incentive in defeating Wynnum.

It was the Panthers' who took the initiative in the opening minutes, as the home side took full control of the match. Tries to Mark Eacott, Jason Bulgarelli and Tom Pritchard saw Wests jump out to a 16-0 lead. Wynnum had no answers as home side ripped through their feeble defensive line and were always going to find it tough to get back into the game, having conceded many points so early.

Wynnum had their chances to score points in the first half but were let down by poor options and some pretty determined Panthers' defence.

One Wynnum forward (Jason Asplet I think it was) incurred the wrath of the referee, Tony Maksoud, and was sent to the sinbin for decent. Luckily, the Seagulls did not let any more points in while one man down.

Wests remained 16-0 until half-time.

For Wynnum to get back into this match, they had to be the first team to score. Which is what they exactly did! Shortly after the break, a Seagulls' player swooped on a loose pass from Wests and sprinted down the field to score the try. I'm not sure which player it was at the present moment as the ground announcer didn't say who scored. (Isn't what they are supposed to do????) The try was not converted and the Panthers' led 16-4.

However, that was the only shining moment for Wynnum on a night when just about nothing went right for them. Wests went on with it and effectively put away their opponents. Tries to Jason Bulgarelli, Shane Hamilton and Semi Tadula in the second half completed the rout for the home side and saw them secure their second win of the season. It also capped off a memorable night for Wayne Treleaven.

All in all, Wests put in a good performance on the night. The Panthers were able to tear apart their opponent's and exploited their weakness out wide. They also put in a great defensive effort allowing Wynnum to score only one try for the full 80 minutes. Wests now face Cairns away and would just about chance themselves to get over the Cyclones.

As for Wynnum, the score just about sums up why the Seagulls are languishing at the bottom of the table with no points. Having put in such a spirited performance the week before, they would extremely disappointed not to even test the Panthers. Simple fundamental mistakes, some poor kicking options and woeful defence were all major causes in the Seagulls' downfall. They now face Souths at home and it looks they will be in for another torrid clash with another loss looming. Surely things can't get much worse for the injury ridden, inexperienced Seagulls outfit.
