Burleigh have stamped their premiership aspirations with a superb performance against Toowoomba at Pizzey Park on Saturday. The Bears ended the winning streak of the Clydesdales by thoroughly dominating the match and deservedly won 38-14. The win was all set up with a dominant first half and they never allowed Toowoomba back into in the second, thus securing a win for Burleigh over the competition leaders.

Burleigh played one of best halves I've seen from a Bundy Gold Cup side this year. After 31 minutes, the Bears absolutely stunned their opposition by jumping out to a 26-0 lead. Five good tries were scored in that period with Dan Kennedy's in the 24 minute being the pick of them. Grant Adamson put in a little chip kick and regathered the ball. He dodged and weaved around the defence before giving it to another player. The ball went through several hands before Greg Bourke finally put Kennedy right in the corner. It was an excellent display of keeping the ball alive and showed what great form the home side were in at the time.

Toowoomba managed to quickly score two tries, just before half-time, to only trail by 26-10 at the break. Brent Tate was highly involved in both by putting Steve Irwin in the corner and scoring the second under the posts by running off a Casey McGuire pass. It gave them a small sniff of getting back into the game.

But Burleigh put paid to any comeback and extended their lead to 30-10 when Nick Shaw crashed over the line to score his second try. Grant Adamson put up a great cross field kick and Jim Lenihan snatched it out of the grasp of two Toowoomba defenders. Lenihan gave it Shaw and nobody was there to stop the centre from crossing the line.

Tony Duggan scored a long range try for the Clydesdales but the Bears simply had all the answers.

Another superb example of keeping the ball alive saw Greg Bourke sprint to line to score a well deserved try in the 60th minute. Winger Dan Kennedy decided to take on Steve Irwin down the sideline and got around the Clydesdales' player. He gave it another Bears' player and it passed through several hands before Ali Brown turned the ball back inside to Bourke and that was the game.

Toowoomba's day was pretty summed up when fullback Paul Carige threw a pass to no one and it went into touch. Burleigh trapped the Clydesdales in goal and insuring goal line drop-out went into touch, thus giving Burleigh another chance to crack the line although they did go for the penalty goal. The penalty goal made the score 38-14 and that's it remained for the rest of the game.

The Bears were absolutely outstanding all over the park. Captain and half-back Grant Adamson was in fine touch, especially his kicking game which was absolutely superb. The forward pack thoroughly laid the foundations for the victory with Shane O'Flanagan and Hudson Smith leading by example. Greg Bourke got heavily involved in attack by setting up a few tries and Chris Horsfall continues to do the job at fullback well in the place of the injured Jamie Mahon. Burleigh, after securing good wins over Redcliffe and Toowoomba, are a genuine premiership threat and will be very difficult to beat for the rest of the season.

The Clydesdales were thoroughly out muscled and outplayed by their opponents. It was a loss they probably needed, having being undefeated for the year, and I'm sure they will bounce back against East Coast next week. Their kicking game was sadly astray and they never got over the initial shock of having 26 points scored against them in the opening 31 minutes.
