City has just managed to ward off a fast finishing Country outfit to post a 16-12 win at Pizzey Park on Saturday. Country had to overcome the loss of halfback Elia Tuqiri to injury in the opening minutes of the game but they almost pulled off a come-for-behind victory. It was only City's superb defence which stopped them from scoring the match winning try.

City posted the first try of the afternoon when Redcliffe 2nd Rower Luke Scott was put into a gap and charged over the line. Graham Cotter had made a small break and was brought down just before the line. The ball was given to Michael Roberts who through a long pass to Brendan Lindsay. Lindsay gave a nice little pass to Scott and big forward was untroubled on his way to the try line.

Country struck back almost immediately with some great work from hooker George Gatis. Gatis sucked two City defenders (Keough and Wilson) with dummies before putting Brent Tate into the clear and the exciting centre sprinted to the try line.

Shortly later, Elia Tuqiri was crunched in a tackle by Troy Lindsay and to be forced off the field with an injury. The injury was later to revealed to be a dislocated elbow and the exciting young halfback would not return to the field. It was a massive blow for Country and one that took some time to overcome.

A Country mistake allowed City to grab the lead again in the 31st minute. Central Qld winger Heath Egglestone fumbled a Roberts' bomb and looking to have regathered the ball. However, Jason Webber pinched the ball off him and City had a very good opportunity to score, which they did a few tackles later. Jason Keough ran across the field before giving the pass to Damien Richters, who sucked his defender in with a dummy and was able to cross over for a try.

Some quick thinking from Craig O'Dwyer saw the hooker extend City's lead to 14-6, just minutes later. O'Dwyer scooted out from dummy-half, caught the defence napping and crossing over for a soft try. O'Dywer has done this a few times for Redcliffe a few times this year and he was able to give City a good lead at half-time.

The second half was a arm wrestle with a Damien Richters penalty goal in the 55th minute the only the scoring that was done in the first 20 minutes of the half.

However, following that conversion, Country started to click into gear and City started to make mistakes and give away penalties. Country pressed at City's line a few times but were not able to penetrate the defence until a Casey McGuire pass put Damon Keating over the line in the 65th minute. Nick Shaw looked to be recipient of the McGuire pass but the Clydesdales' 5/8th gave the ball to Keating instead, which completely fooled the City defence, and the prop crossed over for the try.

City had a couple of opportunities to put the game beyond doubt but a forward pass was thrown twice which would have seen either David Seage or Adam Mogg in for certain tries. However, their defence held fast in the final minutes of the match and they were able to hold on for a narrow 16-12 win.

For City, it was hard to single out a stand-out player in the side.  Michael Roberts directed things well at halfback and was actually give man-of-the-match by the ABC commentators.  It was no surprise to see him get the Qld Residents halfback spot.  Luke Scott was probably the pick of the forwards although Jason Keough, Graham Cotter (at a couple of stages) and Andrew Wynyard also did the job for City.  Adam Mogg was marked pretty well by the opposition but still managed.  Captain Craig O'Dwyer was terribly unlucky to miss out on a spot in the Qld side

Country did extremely well to come back.  It wasn't easy with the loss of Elia Tuqiri so early in the match but Casey McGuire and fill-in halfback Justin McKay handled things well.  George Gatis was potent at dummy-half and probably just got the points over City's O'Dwyer.  Talented Clydesdales' centre Brent Tate looked dangerous in attack and also defended well, putting Damien Richters into touch with a great tackle at one stage of the match.  If that tackle had not been made, Richters would have certainly scored.

The match certainly it's fair share of mistakes and referee Adam Neale did get a bit pedantic with the whistle at times but it still was an exciting spectacle to watch.  City may have just got home is this game but one wonders what might the result had been if Country had not loss one it's attacking weapons to injury, so early in the match?
