Half back Scott Thorburn has made a stunning return
to the East Coast Tigers’ Bundy Gold Cup side with a
superb performance in the Tigers’ easy 46-18 win
over Logan at Langlands Park. The halfback scored 3
tries and kicked 7 goals in a man-of-the-match effort
and largely helped his side break their recent
disappointing form. The Scorpions only trailed 14-18
at the break but fell to pieces in the second half.
Logan got off to the perfect start when Nathan Small
found an overlap in the defence and crossed over in
the corner, just 2 minutes of play. The Tigers’ had
coughed up in the first set of six of the match and
the Scorpions made them pay for that indiscretion with
the try.
However, the reverse happened moments later and it was
East Coast that struck to the level score after a
Logan mistake in their own half. David Baildon was the
try scorer for the Tigers.
Thorburn’s brilliant chip-and-chase effort to score
under the posts saw East Coast grab the lead for the
first time in the match. The Tigers’ halfback
extended his sides’ lead to 8 points, just minutes
later, by kicking a penalty goal.
The Scorpions dominated possession for the next 10
minutes, which eventually saw them grab the lead again
with two quick tries to Shaun McLean and Matt Anderton.
However, a Logan mistake in their own half that gave
the Tigers a perfect opportunity to snatch back the
lead, just before half-time. Which they did
accordingly when David Baildon crossed for his second
try of the match in the 38th minute. East Coast took
in an 18-14 lead at the break.
It was all Tigers’ in the second half and three
quick converted tries in 13 minutes to the home side
effectively put Logan out of the game. That man
Thorburn was bobbing up every where and his short
kicking game and passing was causing the Scorpions all
sorts of problems.
East Coast suffered a couple of hiccups along the way
when Cameron Durnford crashed over to score Logan’s
only points in the second half and Graham Cotter
received 10 minutes in the sin-bin for holding down in
the tackle but they were never in any danger of losing
the game. Scott Thorburn capped off an excellent match
with two more tries and the Tigers eventually ran out
comfortable 46-18 victors.
The Tigers looked to have bounced back to form with
this good win. They have had a rough trot and have
really lacked direction over the past few weeks but
the return of Scott Thorburn may have fixed at
problem. Thorburn was absolutely brilliant and his
kicking (both short and long) and passing games had
the Logan defence at sixes and sevens all day. He set
up some great tries for East Coast and will be an
important asset for his team if they are to show that
they are premiership contenders.
As for the Scorpions, their slim chances of making the
semi-finals are all but over. Logan was never in the
hunt and simply had no answers against their
opposition. Playing for pride will have to be their
goal for the rest of the season.
