Toowoomba maintain their position at the top of the
Bundy Gold Cup table with a sensational 56-0 thrashing
of East Coast Tigers at Langlands Park today. The win
continued the Broncos' romp over the Sharks, who are
the NRL affiliates of the Tigers. Cronulla players
were guests of the Tigers for today's game.
The Clydesdales, aided by the services of demoted
Broncos forward Ashley Harrison, were simply a class
above the highly regarded Tigers as they racked up a
22-0 lead by half time. Hooker Michael Ryan started
the rot with an early try and the Clydesdales never
looked in danger.
Toowoomba continued on in the second half, racing in
tries to Damien Quinn, Justin Hodges, Paul Carige and
Damon Keating. But Harrison was the star, calling for
the ball at every opportunity and setting up the vast
majority of Toowoomba's tries.
Harrison's full range of skills were on display, his
kicking game, passing game, speed and outstanding
defence were at their best. There is little doubt he
will earn a recall to the top grade in two weeks time.
Harrison had been quiet in the opening NRL rounds, and
instead of taking the demotion personally - as team
mate
Stuart Kelly seems to have done - he has used it to
show coach Wayne Bennett why he should be a fixture in
the 17.
Other star performers for Toowoomba were five-eighth
Casey McGuire, halfback Elia Tuqiri, second rower
Corey Parker, prop Damon Keating and centre Brent
Tate. Tate is improving with every game and is a
certain star of the future.
The match, however, was marred when Tigers centre
Jason Bulgarelli's frustration boiled over with 18
minutes remaining. Bulgarelli began punching at Tate
in a tackle and was immediately sin binned by referee
Rob Alexander. On returning, he continued his fight
with Tate the next time the Clydesdale ran the ball
back. As Alexander separated the teams and turned his
back, Bulgarelli ran at Tate and again started
throwing punches.
It took both touch judges, the referee and trainers
from both sides to separate the players, Bulgarelli
refusing to stand down. Alexander sent him off
immediately. But even as Bulgarelli was leaving the
field he was sniping remarks at the Clydesdales
players and was trying to break free of his trainer to
continue his fight.
It was one of the most disgusting pieces of behaviour
on a rugby league field for a long time, and if there
is any justice in the game he will suffer a similar
fate to the disgraced John Hopoate.
