The
Ipswich Jets have continued the recent form slump of
Redcliffe with a 24-18 win at Bendigo Bank Oval on
Saturday. A strong first half performance set up the
win, with the Jets leading 22-6 at the break, and they
defended extremely well in the second to hold out the
Dolphins.
The home side came out strongly in the first half and
put on three quick tries to jump to a 16-0 lead, after
17 minutes of play. Faron Anderson crossed for the
first two tries and was shortly followed up by Reggie
Cressbrook's to have the defending premiers absolutely
stunned.
After a couple of missed opportunities (Damien
Richters knocked on over the line and was held up a
second time), the Dolphins finally got on the board
courtesy of the two halves Michael Roberts and Phil
Graham. Roberts stepped his way through defence before
turning the ball back inside to Graham and he
eventually crossed beside the posts.
Just when the momentum was starting to shift towards
Redcliffe's way, the Jets came up with a well-worked
try to have them on the back foot again. Anderson had
another hand in this try by giving the last pass to
the try scorer Aaron Bulow. Ipswich went into the
sheds with a 22-6 lead. However, they could have been
further in front at the break if they not bombed a
certain try on the stroke of halftime.
Dolphins’ captain Craig O'Dwyer gave his side a
small glimpse of hope when he slid over for a try in
the 56th minute. O'Dywer, using Tony Gould as a dummy
runner, split the defence and crossed the line.
But the Jets' defence proved to be much too strong for
their opposition, who lacked imagination in attack all
day. Despite Phil Graham crossing for second try, they
held Redcliffe at bay for the rest of the half and
went on to records a very satisfying win.
Looking back on the Jets' season, one wonders what
might have happened if they had not been so
inconsistent (they have lost matches to Souths and
Wests) and won a couple more close matches (Ipswich
has had 3 draws plus a couple a losses by a solitary
field goal). This inconsistency also cost them any
chance of making the semi-finals in 2000 and it’s
something they will have to work on for next year.
As for Redcliffe, a lot of work needs to be done to
ensure they feature in this year's grand final. If
Norths defeat Wynnum today, the Dolphins could be
playing for third spot against the Devils in next
week's clash. Another loss will make the task even
tougher for the defending premiers.
