The Souths Magpies have caused the upset of the season
in the Bundy Gold Cup when they downed the Ipswich
Jets 22-12 at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday. The
Magpies put in a superb defensive effort to hold out
the Jets to record their first victory of the year.
The Magpies got off a great start and led 14-0 after
25 minutes. Ben Cameron scored the first two tries
but, unfortunately, he was forced from the field with
a leg injury shortly after scoring his second try. The
third try came off a fantastic team effort in which
Grant Astill, son of Magpies' great Bruce Astill, was
put into a gap by Matt McCosker and scored beside the
posts.
The home side struck back before half-time when centre
Ray Mercy managed extend his arm out and place the
ball on the line. Half-time score was 14-4 in Souths
favour.
Souths extended their lead courtesy of a Matt Lockyer
penalty goal but it would be Ipswich who would cross
for the next try. Winger Marshall Chalk somehow
managed to place the ball down, having been initially
tackled by 3 Souths' defenders. Ray Mercy pushed the
pack of players towards the sideline and Chalk was
able to score the try.
Just when the momentum was swinging towards the Jets,
the Magpies struck back with a converted try to Brett
Stevens. Josh Stowers dummied and sprinted through the
gap in the defence before off-loading the ball to
Stevens and crossed for the try.
It was clear that the Magpies were not going to let
the home side back into match with some great defence
and held the Jets' attack at bay for the rest of the
match. Ipswich managed to cross for a consolation try
but it was a bit little too late. Souths eventually
ran 10 point victors and recorded their first
win of the season.
