East
Coast remain in the race for the 2001 Bundy Gold Cup
with a 52-10 mauling of Norths at Bishop Park on
Saturday. The Tigers went on a 10-try romp and showed
that they have the fire power to match it with any
team. The Devils scored the first try of the game but
were totally out of their depth against a much more
powerful opposition. East Coast now travel to Pizzey
Park to face Burleigh in another elimination
semi-final.
The Devils were able to score the first try of the
match when Dallas Johnson crossed over in the 8th
minute. Johnson brushed off a couple of attempts at
tackles by the Tigers and scored the try.
It took East Coast about 20 minutes to register their
first points of the game and it came through Ricky
Taylor. Scott Thorburn faded across the ruck before
turning the ball back inside to a charging Taylor and
the forward crashed over the top of the Devils defence
to cross for the try.
The Tigers grabbed the lead, 5 minutes later, when
Aseri Laing powered his way over for his first try of
the day. East Coast were attacking the try line and
was able to grab another set of six after a Norths'
player attempted a one-on-one strip and knocked on the
ball. This proved to be too much for the home side and
Ricky Taylor turned the ball back inside to Laing for
him to score.
Norths were constantly under pressure from their
mistakes and it was only a matter of time before they
conceded another try. The Tigers caught them short out
wide and centre David Baildon was able to slide over
the line in the left-hand corner.
Second Rower Ricky Taylor was having a superb game for
East Coast and was able to deliver a decisive blow,
just half-time. He faded across the ruck, attracting
the attention of a couple of defenders, to put Martin
Allen into a gap and he raced over for a simple try.
The try gave the Tigers a very commanding 22-6 lead at
the break.
Taylor continued his great form into the second half
when he beautifully snapped up a high bomb to cross
for his second try. Scott Thorburn put up a very high
kick and Ricky came through to snatch the ball out of
the reach of Cooper Cronk.
The floodgates suddenly opened and East Coast ran in 5
more tries in the final 30 minutes to crack the 50
mark. Laing and Baildon grabbed their second tries
while Scott Thorburn (who ran a length-of-the-field
intercept try), Wade Liddell and Chris Nahi added to
the Devils' woes with 4-pointers.
Cronk managed to cross for Norths' only try in the
second half but it was to be one of the very few
highlights of the game for the home side. It was a
rather disappointing way to end the season but the
Devils will be back next year. The Tigers now come up
against Burleigh at Pizzey Park next Saturday night.
