Norths have recorded a resounding win over the Central
Comets at Bishop Park in a match that failed to reach
any great heights. The Devils had to hold off a
early second half comeback from the Comets but managed
to run away with the match at the end. Their
cause was pretty much helped by a very disappointing
defensive display from Central.
The Devils jumped out to a 18-0 lead after 31 minutes
of play. Paul Sheedy started the rot when he
scored the home side's first points, just after 2
minutes into the match, when he got on the outside of
his defender and sprinted 40 metres to score a soft
try. Tai Lavea, Semi Tadulala and Junior Langi
all took advantage of their opponent's shoddy defence
by scoring tries and it was becoming all too easy for
the home side.
The Comets finally got on the board in the 37th minute
when Justin Loomans finally did something right and
crossed in the corner. Hooker Graham White made
a great break for the Comets and flung the ball behind
when the Devils' defenders caught him. The
Comets through the ball to the left and Loomans
finished off the movement by getting over the
line. Norths still held a 18-4 advantage at
half-time and it would take a major improvement from
the visitors if they were to get back into the match.
After the break, Central came out and narrowed the
Devils' lead down to just two points in the 50th
minute. Bert
Tabuai scored the first when he beautifully took a Ian
Dunemann bomb out of the reach of Tai Lavea and
crossed underneath the posts. 5 minutes later,
Wade Rothery darted and weaved past a couple of
defenders to score under the posts and the Comets were
suddenly back in the game.
However, it didn't take long for the Comets to slip
back into their old ways and Norths virtually
dominated the game from that point onwards. The
Devils managed to add four more tries before full time
sounded with Paul Sheedy grabbing two of these to give
the winger 3 tries for the match. In each of
these tries, all the Devils had to do is go out wide
and a hole in the Central defensive line suddenly
appeared. Norths eventually won the match by 34-16.
All-in-all, it was a very ordinary game of football
with both side making plenty of handling errors.
The Devils won the match because of the disgraceful
defensive effort put up by their opponents. Paul
Sheedy's performance was one of the very few
highlights of the game and he definitely deserved the
ABC match-of-the-match award. Tai Lavea also put
in good effort as did Marty Turner (even though he had
an off day with the boot), who continues to impress me
as a player.
Today's effort by the Comets probably explains why
they are sitting in last place on the ladder, at the
present moment. Coach Ross O'Reilly has some
real issues to address in the coming week and it's got
to start with the defence. Their attack wasn't
much better and they became very predictable at
times. They've got Souths next week at home and
that is a good opportunity to play themselves into
some form. It's going to take a mammoth effort
for Central to make the semi-finals but if they play
their cards right, it is not a task beyond their
capabilities.
