East Coast has gained a bit of an psychological edge with a 28-18 win over Norths at Bishop Park on Saturday. These two sides are almost certain to play in the elimination semi-final and a win in this game would go a long way in gaining home ground advantage for this match. The Tigers' win now gives them a good chance of snatching 4th spot off the Devils, whom they now only trail by 1 point. They have an much easier draw than Norths and would be favourites to finish in that spot at the end of the preliminary rounds.

The victory was set up with a dominant first half in which they took the opportunities that were given to them to be up 18-4 at the break. John Wilshere, Marcus Jensen and Scott Sipple were the try scorers for the visitors while Terry Bensen was the solitary scorer for the Devils.

East Coast soon added to the Devils' frustrations when Ricky Taylor crossed for a try just after half-time. Ironically, Norths' coach Terry Matterson was speaking to Warren Boland on TV at the time and would have been none too pleased at conceding what was a pretty soft try.

The Devils tried their best to get back into the match but they could not penetrate the tough Tigers defence. The match was all over when Scott Thorburn intercepted a Marty Turner long pass and sprinted all the way to the try line, in the 64th minute, to make the score 28-6 in favour of East Coast.

After the Thorburn try, the Tigers went to sleep and the home side ran in three quick tries in the final minutes of the match. Paul Whaturia scored two and Semi Tadulala another as Norths finally put together some good tries. Both sides finished the match with only with 12 men after Kevin Carmichael and Scott Sipple were sent to the sin-bin for fighting in the 74th minute. However, the late rush of tries was a little too late for the home side and East Coast ran out 28-18 winners.
