The Burleigh Bears have
sounded out a warning to the rest of the top 5 sides
with a 44-10 hammering of a depleted Redcliffe outfit
at Dolphin Oval. The Bears led 12-6 at half-time but
ran away with the match in the second half.
Redcliffe were able to score the first try of the
match in the 19th minute when Rod West managed to fend
off Burleigh captain Grant Adamson and crossed over
the line. The Bears had made a handling error in their
own half and lock Tony Gould broke from the scrum
before allowing West to break through the defence and
put the Dolphins on the board.
The match suddenly degenerated into a mistake fest
with both sides coughing up the ball several times and
having problems adjusting to the wet and miserable
conditions. Redcliffe were asking for trouble by
continually giving their opposition the opportunity to
score and, surely enough, Burleigh were able to
capitalize on this with Adam Hayden crossing over
beside the posts. Adamson ran at the defensive line,
dragging in a few defenders. He flicked the ball to
fullback Chris Horsfall, who quickly gave the pass to
Hayden, and the 5/8th was able to run into the gap to
cross for the try.
Hayden gave Burleigh the lead when he crossed over for
his second try, right on half-time. Adam simply bust
through two defenders and spun around Dolphins'
fullback Troy Mitchell to plant the ball down over the
line. The Bears went in the sheds with a 12-6 lead but
the best was yet to come for the maroon and whites.
A charge down of a Tony Gould kick allowed Simon Geros
to extend Burleigh's led to 18-6, just after the
break. Dean Allen charged down Gould's kick and Geros
regathered the ball to score under the posts.
Things went from bad to worse for the Dolphins when
Troy Mitchell was sent to the sin-bin for a
play-the-ball infringement. Seizing this great
opportunity, Burleigh were able to cross for two
unconverted tries in the time that Redcliffe only had
12 men on the field. Greg Bourke was put over the line
with a Dean Allen pass and Dan Kennedy scored a
brilliant try when he was into the clear and put in a
little chip kick, before Adamson finally put the
winger over in the corner.
The Dolphins dropped their heads and the Bears
suddenly went on a scoring spree. Dean Allen, Grant
Adamson and Dan Kennedy all crossed for tries all
within 6 minutes to have them out to a stunning 44-6
lead.
It seemed 50 might have been on the cards for Burleigh
but Redcliffe managed to not allow them to score any
more tries. Probably their finest moment in the second
half came when Tony Gould broke through the defence
and put Phil Graham into the clear to score a
consolation try.
Burleigh have showed in this match that they are a
premiership threat. After a slow start to the season,
the Bears starting to click into gear. They were able
to capitalize on their opposition's errors and seize
their opportunities with great effort. Halves Grant
Adamson and Adam Hayden were absolutely outstanding
for the Bears, causing many headaches for the
Dolphins. Chris Horsfall also great at fullback and
saved a couple of tries being scored with some last
ditch tackles. The big Burleigh forward pack out
muscled their opposition and laid the foundation for a
great win. The Bears have Toowoomba next week and I'm
sure they will be willing to inflict the first loss on
their opposition for the year.
There was no doubt that Redcliffe were missing their 5
Queensland Residents players. It clearly showed in
their performance today. They will have to put this
loss behind them and focus on next match against an
out-of-sorts East Coast outfit.
In the lower grades, Redcliffe were extremely lucky to
escape with a 12-all draw with Wests (after Marc
Fickling missed a simple penalty goal right in front
of the posts to the Panthers the win) in Colts while
the Dolphins had a crushing 56-6 win over the last
placed Panthers in A Grade.
