Round 16: July 7, 8

Burleigh Bears 38

Goals: Greg Bourke 5
defeated Toowoomba Clydesdales 14
Tries: Steve Irwin, Brent Tate, Tony Duggan
Goals: Steve Irwin
Venue: Pizzey Park
Date: Sat July 7
Comments: Burleigh have stamped their premiership aspirations with a superb performance against Toowoomba at Pizzey Park on Saturday. The Bears ended the winning streak of the Clydesdales by thoughly dominating the match and deservedly won 38-14. The win was all set up with a dominant first half and they never allowed Toowoomba back into in the second, thus securing a win for Burleigh over the competition leaders.

Wests Panthers 26
Tries: Brent Webb 2, James Brown, Geoff Rolleston, Daniel Hoppe
Goals: James Brown 3
drew with Ipswich Jets 26
Tries: Marshall Chalk 2, Reggie Cressbrook, Faron Anderson, Richard Allwood
Goals: Alwyn Simpson 3
Venue: Purtell Park
Date:
Sat July 7
Comments: Wests have managed to score a stunning draw against the inconsistent Jets.  The Panthers have had a rough season but have still managed to pull off the odd upset along the way.  Ipswich now need a minor miracle to make the semi-finals.

Central Queensland Comets 16
Tries: Justin Loomans, Scott Minto, David Smith
Goals: Walson Carlos 2
drew with Norths Devils 16
Tries: Paul Sheedy 2, Cameron Smith
Goals: Paul Sheedy, David Collis
Venue: Browne Park
Date: Sat July 7

Comments:
Central have scored a last ditch try to snatch yet another draw this time with Norths.  The Comets led 10-6 at half-time then the Devils scored the next two tries to be up 16-10.  However, for the second week in a row, the home side pulled one out of the bag and came away with the draw.  This is the third draw for both sides for the year.

East Coast Tigers 42
Tries: Wade Liddell, David Baildon, Martin Allen, Robert Thompson, Mark Mom, Scott Sipple, Jason Bulgarelli
Goals: John Wilshere 7
defeated Redcliffe Dolphins 26
Tries: Phil Graham 2, Adam Mogg, Troy Mitchell, Luke Scott
Goals: Damien Richters 2, Michael Roberts
Venue: Langlands Park
Date: Sun July 8
Comments: East Coast have registered a much needed win over second placed Redcliffe.  The Tigers ran away with the match after Dolphins' prop Troy Lindsay had been sent off for a high tackle in the 52nd minute.  It had been an enthralling contest up until then with both teams trading tries at several times during the match.  The Dolphins also lost Adam Mogg to the sin-bin just before the break and the Tigers managed to score to make it 10-all at half-time.  The home side scored again early to grab the lead but Phil Graham immediately replied for the Dolphins to make it 14-all.  Lindsay was then sent off by referee Mark Waugh after Martin Allen just crossed for a Tigers' try.  Despite Graham's excellent second try, which drew the scores level again, it was all downhill from there for Redcliffe and their defence fell to pieces for the second time in two weeks.  East Coast ran in four more tries to finally end their run of outs against the Dolphins and keep their premiership chances alive.

Logan Scorpions 20
Tries: Brad Sim, Steve Shilvock, Herman Lafaele, Brendon Lindsay
Goals: Brad Sim 2
defeated Wynnum Seagulls 16
Tries: David Seage 2, Odelle Harris.
Goals: Jay O'Doherty 2
Venue: Meakin Park
Date:
Sun July 8
Comments: Wynnum's semi-finals chances have taken a big nosedive after they were defeated by Logan.  The Seagulls are 5 points adrift of the top 5 and now need to start relying on other factors (like East Coast losing three of their last five matches) to make the finals.  Credit to the Scorpions, they have had an up-and-down season and it was good to see them finally win a close match.
