2001 Queensland Cup
Round 17: July 14, 15

Central Queensland Comets 30
Tries: Justin Loomans 2, Wade Rothery, Graham White, Scott Minto
Goals: Walson Carlos 5
defeated Souths Magpies 12
Tries: Matt Lockyer, Tristan Brady-Smith
Goals: Matt Lockyer 2
Venue: Davies Park
Date:
Sat July 14
Comments: A strong second half performance has ensured the Centrals Comets a 30-12 win against Souths at Davies Park, on Saturday. The Magpies came out enthusiastically in the first half to jump out to a 12-0 lead, just after 18 minutes of play, but, as has happened in most of their matches this year, were eventually worn down by the Comets. Central coach Ross O'Reilly described his teams' first half performance as woeful but they certainly made amends in the second with a dominant effort and they secured the win.

Toowoomba Clydesdales 32
Tries: Brent Tate 2, Casey McGuire, Kirk Reynoldson, Paul Carige
Goals: Damien Quinn 6
defeated East Coast Tigers 6
Tries: Scott Thorburn
Goals: John Wilshere
Venue: Carrara Stadium
Date: Sun July 15

Comments:
Toowoomba look certain to take out the minor premiership after a convincing 32-6 win over East Coast at Carrara Stadium on Sunday.  The Clydesdales are 3 points in front of Redcliffe, who managed to defeat Logan 36-18 on the weekend, and it's hard to imagine they will lose twice in the final rounds of the Bundy Gold Cup.  The Tigers proved disappointing yet again and simply don't look capable of winning the premiership. They most likely to hold onto fifth spot, unless Wynnum can produce some sort of miracle, but could find themselves with an early exit unless things improve quickly..

Burleigh Bears 34
Tries: Greg Bourke 3, Jim Lenihan, Grant Adamson, Simon Geros
Goals: Greg Bourke 5
defeated Ipswich Jets 24
Tries: Marshall Chalk, Trent Flood, Campbell McNiven
Goals: Francis Renouf 6
Venue: Bendigo Bank Oval
Date: Sun July 15
Comments: Burleigh ended whatever slim chance Ipswich had of making the semi-finals by defeating the home side 34-24 at Bendigo Bank Oval.  The Bears didn't have it all their way in this match and trailed 10-12 at half-time but they eventually proved to be too strong for the Jets in the end.  Greg Bourke continues his point scoring blitz of recent weeks with 22 points (3 tries & 6 goals) to now lead the points scorers table on 182 points..

Norths Devils 52
Tries: Marty Turner 4, Brook Martin 3, Brad Watts, Dallas Johnson, John Flint
Goals: Marty Turner 6
defeated Wests Panthers 34
Tries: Brent Webb 3, James Brown, Geoff Rolleston, Ben Willis
Goals: James Brown 5
Venue: Bishop Park
Date: Sun July 15
Comments: Norths hold onto fourth spot with an unconvincing 52-34 win over Wests at Bishop Park. The Devils scored 10 tries against the Panthers but let their opposition score 34 in return.  Talented young half-back Marty Turner scored 4 tries and kicked 6 goals while winger Brook Martin grabbed a hat trick for Norths. For the visitors, Brent Webb crossed over for 3 tries and the young fullback, one of the few highlights for the Panthers this year, now heads the try scoring table on 17.

Redcliffe Dolphins 36
Tries: Adam Mogg 2, Phil Graham 2, Michael Roberts, Luke Scott
Goals: Damien Richters 6
defeated Logan Scorpions 18
Tries: Brendan Currie 2, Shane Tronc
Goals: Brad Sim 3
Venue: Dolphin Oval
Date:
Sun July 15
Comments: Redcliffe has capped off fullback Adam Mogg's 100th first grade match with a 36-18 win over Logan at Dolphin Oval on Sunday. Mogg scored two tries for the Dolphins as they get back on track to back-to-back premierships, after suffering two consecutive losses in previous weeks. However, coach Neil Wharton will be a little disappointed that they did not go on with the job in the second half, having had a 30-0 lead at half-time.
