2001 Queensland Cup
Round 9: May 12, 13

Ipswich Jets 30
Tries: Ricky Bird 3, Reggie Cressbrook, Brian McCarthy, Richard Allwood
Goals: Reggie Cressbrook 3
defeated Logan City Scorpions 26
Tries: Darren Ireland, Phil Shilvock, Shane Tronc, Adam Daly
Goals: Brad Sim 5
Venue: Meakin Park
Date:
Sat May 12
Comments: A man-of-the-match performance from dynamic 5/8th Ricky Bird has given Ipswich a much needed win over Logan.  Bird scored three tries and wrapped up the game for the Jets when he crossed over for a great individual try, 4 minutes from full-time.  It was a see-sawing match with both teams swapping the lead several times in the match.  The Scorpions look to have the upper hand when Brad Sim kicked a penalty goal to break a 24-all deadlock, late in the second half, but Birds' great try put any paid to that.  Despite the home side dominating possession in the match and a 10-2 penalty count against them, Ipswich were able to grind out the win and, more importantly, a still a good chance of the making the semi-finals.

Wests Panthers 34

Tries: Brent Webb 2, Geoff Rolleston, Steve Franciscus, James Brown, Denny Lambert
Goals: James Brown 5
defeated Central Queensland Comets 12
Tries: Justin Loomans 2, Heath Egglestone
Venue: Purtell Park
Date: Sat May 12

Comments:
Wests have registered their second win of the season with a resounding win over the Central Comets, at home.  The Panthers have had a disappointing year, so far, and this effort will give the inexperienced side some confidence to savage some pride for the rest of the season.  If there was any doubt of the Comets chances' of making the finals, it would have been well in truly eliminated with this sad performance.  Put it frankly, Central are the under-achievers of the year so far.

Toowoomba Clydesdales 24
Tries: Elia Tuqiri, Damon Keating, Michael Ryan, Michael Coorey
Goals: Damien Quinn 4
defeated Wynnum Seagulls 16
Tries: Lance Cronk, David Seage, Ben Martin
Goals: Nathan Webber
Venue: Kougari Oval
Date: Sun May 13
Comments: Toowoomba remain undefeated for the season but were given an almighty fright by the home side.  Wynnum, after a disappointing performance against the other unbeaten side Redcliffe last week, were not expected to trouble the high flying Clydesdales but dished it up to their opponents.  Damon Keating scored a late try to give the visitors an 8 point victory.

East Coast Tigers 32
Tries: David Baildon 2, John Wilshere, Brett McPherson, Mark Mom
Goals: John Wilshere 6
defeated Norths Devils 16
Tries: John Paul Cherry 2, Tai Lavea
Goals: Marty Turner 2
Venue: Langlands Park
Date:
Sun May 13
Comments: East Coast have bounced back to form with a good win over Norths at home.  The Tigers were staring down the barrel of a fourth consecutive defeat but proved to be too good for the Devils in this match.  East Coast's win means that Toowoomba and Redcliffe now have a 6 point lead on the rest of teams in the competition.

Burleigh Bears 40
Tries: Greg Bourke 3, Jamie Mahon, Aaron Douglas, Adam Hayden, Grant Adamson, Chris Horsfall
Goals: Greg Bourke 4
defeated Souths Magpies 28
Tries: Josh Stowers 3, Tristan Brady-Smith, Matt McCosker
Goals:
Andrew Murdoch 3, Matt Lockyer
Venue: Pizzey Park
Date: Sun May 13
Comments: Burleigh have stormed home to record a win over a gutsy Magpie outfit.  The Bears were trailing 28-16 at one stage of the match but managed to dig themselves out of trouble.  However, despite the win, Burleigh are not clearly performing as well as they could and coach Rick Stone will have work to do with his team if they consider themselves premiership contenders.  Souths gave it all their best but weren't able to hold out the home side, in the end.
