The Toowoomba Clydesdales have continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 44-30 win over tenacious Burleigh at ANZ Stadium. The win gave former Broncos hero Kevin Walters a successful start to his coaching career.

The Clydesdales started sensationally in the first half, with tries scored by Brent Tate, Ken McGuinness and Casey McGuire in the opening 15 minutes for a 16-0 lead. But Burleigh fought back with tries to Dean Allen and Ali Brown to be within four points after 25 minutes.

However, Toowoomba consolidated, scoring magic tries through wingers Damien Quinn and Tony Duggan for a 28-12 lead at the break. The Clydesdales' penchant for keeping the ball alive reaped dividends, with both Quinn and Duggan capitalising on brilliant lead up play.

An early try in the second half looked to signal a continue of the rout, McGuire's second putting them ahead 34-12. But once again the Bears, on the back of some Toowoomba mistakes and a run of penalties from Adam Neale, got back into the contest. Tries to Tony Gray, Nick Shaw and Adam Hayden had them within four points with almost 20 minutes remaining, and the normally rock solid Toowoomba defence was looking paper thin.

A Burleigh mistake was all that was needed, however. Elia Tuqiri, cousin of Broncos winger Lote Tuqiri and in his first season of rugby league after switching from rugby union, scored close to the posts with 13 minutes remaining to seal victory. A try in the final minute to Quinn and his sideline conversion gave him a match tally of 20 points and the Clydesdales their sixth win of the season.
