The Wynnum Seagulls proved to be much too strong
for the Wests Panthers in the Bundy Gold Cup match
played at Purtell Park on Saturday. The Seagulls won
the match 40-22.
The home side got off to a very bad start when they
let Wynnum score two relatively soft tries in the
opening 7 minutes of the game. Wynnum 5/8th Grant
Dutton put a small kick towards Panthers fullback
Brent Webb. Webb got a very bad bounce and the ball
popped right into the hands of David Seage and he ran
away to score the Seagulls' first try. The second try
came off a scrum against the feed and Seagulls
half-back Wade Bachmann ran through a gaping hole in
the defence to sprint away for a 70 metre try.
After a glut of possession, the Panthers struck back
when Craig Bowen put centre Danny Smith into the gap
and Smith charged over the line for the try. They were
in again, just moments later, courtesy of Daniel Hoppe
who darted for dummy-half and forced his way over the
line.
However, another poor defensive error by Wests allowed
the Seagulls to extend their lead to 18-8 when Lance
Cronk brushed aside two defenders, Mark Eacott and
Chris Anderson, and scooted to place the ball under
the posts. The movement was started by Daniel Frame,
who managed to off-load the ball to Cronk with a few
defenders hanging off him. Lance soon spotted
the gap in the Panthers' defence and scored the
try shortly after.
The Panthers were not ready to give up and they struck
back before half-time. Big prop Chris Anderson was
perfectly positioned to put Terry Proctor into a gap
and Proctor scored the try for Wests. At half-time,
Wynnum led 18-12 with both teams scoring three apiece
but the Seagulls managed to convert all their tries as
opposed to Wests, who converted none.
After the break, the Seagulls took the game by the
scruff of the neck and cut loose. Tries to Eddie Alia
, Grant Dutton (twice) and Gareth Turton gave Wynnum a
very convincing 40-12 lead after 63 minutes and they had eventually shown
their class over the home side.
However, to the Panthers credit, they did not give in
and they scored two consolation tries to add a bit of
respectability to the score line. The biggest
cheer of the afternoon for the crowd went to winger
and Panthers' goal kicker James Brown, who a
terrible day with the boot, after he finally converted
(right in front, mind you) the Shane Hamilton try,
Wests' last try of the match. The final score
line was 40-22 in favour of Wynnum.
