Wynnum have recorded a solid 42-30 win over Wests at Kougari Oval On Saturday. The Seagulls jumped out a 36-6 lead at one stage in the second half but allowed the Panthers to add a bit of respectability to score. The visitors made too many handling errors and were pretty much outclassed in the forwards to but they never gave up trying.

The home side's first try of the game was a controversial one when lock forward Daniel Frame appeared to lose the ball in tackle, a few tackles just before the try was eventually scored. However, referee Tony Maksoud ruled that he didn't and Wade Bachmann eventually crossed for the line, when he ran onto a pass from Jason Keough.

Wynnum were soon out to a 12-0 lead after fullback Jay O'Doherty sprinted 50 metres to score under the posts unmarked. O'Doherty was put into a gap by a nice pass by Daniel Frame and the defence couldn't catch the quick fullback.

The Panthers managed to put their first points on in the 25th minute when James Brown crossed over in the corner. Craig Bowen ran at the line dragging in a couple of defenders before passing the ball to centre Jason Gibson. Gibson then put an unmarked Brown into a gap and the winger scored the try.

However, Wests immediately gave Wynnum a perfect opportunity to strike back when Denny Lambert split a ball, right from the kick off. The Panthers were able to hold their opposition for one set of six but the Seagulls scored in the next set when Luke Richards simply sliced through the defence and went over under the posts. Wynnum went into the sheds at half-time with a comfortable 18-6 lead.

The match was virtually all over by the 54th minute when the Seagulls scored three tries in 6 minutes to put them up 36-6. The first try in the second half was an absolutely beauty with some great passes involved which included a flick back pass by Lance Cronk into the waiting hands of Wade Bachmann who crossed for his second try. Clayton Maher was heavy involved in the next two which included a bust right through middle of the defence before giving to ball to his brother Nathan to score and a nice off load to Ron Troutman so the hooker could cross under the posts.

The Panthers never gave up trying and full back Brent Webb managed a hatrick of tries in the final 23 minutes of the match. Webb was fantastic in a losing side and his speed, stepping ability and skill mark him as a player of the future. Talented young winger Steve Franciscus (another player of the future) also had a great game and he was rewarded with a try in the 64th minute.

The home side also scored another try in that period with Lance Crock crossing over in the 75th minute to the put the icing on the cake. However, Webb was to cross again for the Panthers but Wynnum eventually ran out 42-30 winners.
